Ive been looking at flash programmers for a while now and no one can give me the answers I'm looking for. Whats the difference between brands? Ive been looking at the Snap-On Pass-Thru but was told it can only do emissions controllers. I have also looked at the Drew Tech tool and have read it can flash other modules other than emission controllers. Is that true and if so what applications? I have E-mailed Drew Tech but got no response. I have also looked at the Cardone unit and even had a rep in the shop. He couldn't really answer these questions and when I tried to contact him I was unsuccessful. So, support is a concern of mine. I have talked to the Ease people but their tool is a little expensive and there isn't a rep in my area. Any help would be great!!

-snip- Whats the difference between brands? -snip- I'm assuming you are referring to J2534 programmers. If so, a very good explanation can be found at www.kvaser.com/index.htm. Basically, your capabilities (and costs) to program vehicle ECUs is up to the discretion of the manufacturers. Be advised there USUALLY is more to be done AFTER a module is programmed, that a J2534 tool may NOT be able to do!

I think it matters what your market is. Domestic, Asian, Euro. I mostly have the big 5 (GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Honda) and I have found that mostly Ford and GM are the ones that require the most flashing. For those I use the Tech 2 and the IDS. Other than that the only ones I run across are occasional Euro that requires coding which I use the Vag-Com or the Vedis.

Many driveability & emission problems can only be repaired through flashing (software update). If you need help with flash/reprogramming, Automotive Video (Team AVI) has a training program on DVD with John Thornton. The program explains what flashing is, how it works, what you can & cannot do with it and the tools you will need. Visit www.auto-video.com/j2534-vehicle-flashing-reprogramming-package-p-66.html?ref=17 for more information.

NASTF also has a direct link to the OE websites.Do some research there under J2534.My son and I have a mobile reprogramming business and we've done alot of research BEFORE we started doing this.go in and see what tools they have validated their software with. The 2 J boxes that are universally approved are the Drewtech CarDaq plus,CarDaq M, and Standard's Iflash. We own all 3 and they work.We also own 15 factory scan tools because alot of times you can program with a J box but you need factory tooling to finish the job.As far as access to modules that's decided by the vehicle manufacturer.GM and Ford give us almost unlimited access w J2534.Chrysler ecm and tcm only. The OE's have it layed out on their sites.Your learning curve just went up.IATN's website may be a help to you also.Techs helping Techs.
